Death On The Back Porch

"SEBRING, FL - Highlands County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a 911 call at 4401 Shamrock St. just after 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning after two dead bodies were apparently discovered at the residence.

"Located just east off of Thunderbird Road, records from the Highlands County Tax Appraiser's Office show that the house is owned by James (Jim) L. Guy. According to one witness at the scene, there was a possible murder-suicide inside the 1,200-square foot, gray, ranch-style house.

"When contacted at 1:15 p.m., Capt. Randy Labelle of the HCSO would say nothing other than that there was a death investigation under way at the house and that deputies were awaiting a search warrant so they could begin their investigation.

"Sheriff Susan Benton said that standard practice after a scene is secured for the safety of deputies and victims is for everyone to back off until a search warrant is obtained before any evidence is gathered.

"Ralph Levingston [said] he saw the bodies of Guy and his girlfriend on the screened-in back porch of the house. Levingston also reported seeing a small pistol on the floor near Guy, who had a wound to the head.

"Levingston also reported seeing the unidentified girlfriend on her knees with her face in the chair on across the room, and blood on the floor.

"Levingston [said] that he had known Guy for 15 to 20 years, and was heading over to the house to see why Guy had missed an 8 a.m. meeting to go get a sailboat in Okeechobee.

"`We were going to bring his sailboat back to his house so he could sell it,` Levingston said.

"`I didn't go into the house. I just saw them from outside the screen porch, about eight feet from the door,` he added.

"Levingston had no idea why the deputies were seeking a search warrant."

"Money Was Running Out"

"QUEENS, NY - A Manhattan diamond merchant — who was suffering business and health problems — shot and killed his 78-year-old wife in their bed today and then turned the gun on himself, sources said.

"Police were alerted by co-workers when Morris Green, 76, failed to show up at his Fifth Avenue office.

"They went to Green’s apartment on 196th Place in Fresh Meadows, Queens, where’s he lived with his wife Charlotte for more than three decades.

"Police obtained a key from a neighbor, went inside and found the couple shot to death in their bed. A .38 caliber handgun was also found in the bed, sources said.

"Green had obtained the licensed gun because of security concerns related to his jewelry business.

"Investigators said Green’s business took a downtown along with the economy and he apparently decided to take his own life rather than face the bleak future.

"`Money was running out,` one source said.

"Investigators and neighbors also said that both Green and his wife, a writer, had serious health problems and mounting medical bills.

"But others who knew Green refused to think he had killed himself and his wife.

"`No! There was no way he could ever be involved with something like that,` said Tim Kaziu, 47, maintenance man in the Greens’ building. `He’s a wonderful man. Always joking and always laughing.`"

Cop Commits Suicide After Lover Found In Shallow Grave

"Chattahoochee, FL - A Chattahoochee police officer shot himself to death Friday as police were discovering the body of his long-time mistress buried in a shallow grave near his home east of Chattahoochee, according to Chattahoochee Police Chief Vann Pullen.

"Lt. Barry Moore, who is married, quickly became a suspect in the disappearance of Antoinette Ross after a witness reported she was seen voluntarily getting into Moore’s police cruiser at her home in Quincy late Wednesday night. She was expected home that evening and never returned. Police believe Moore killed Ross in the early morning hours Thursday, but do not yet know her exact cause of death as an autopsy in pending.

"Pullen said authorities believe Moore learned that Ross had been on a date with someone else earlier Wednesday evening, and confronted her.

"Gadsden County authorities, who were still searching for the missing woman, contacted Pullen around noon Thursday with information about Moore and Ross being seen in the cruiser together in Quincy.

"Pullen immediately suspended Moore for taking the cruiser out of his jurisdiction and using it for personal business. Moore’s service revolver was also confiscated.

"Meanwhile, one of Pullen’s officers reported something unusual that happened during Moore’s overnight shift, which began Wednesday evening.

"The officer said he had pulled up next to Moore in the Florida State Hospital cemetery, and that Moore inexplicably sped away.

"A search of that area turned up nothing suspicious. The search then focused on Moore’s residence. At this point, Moore was on suspension.

"According to Pullen, Moore and Ross had an ongoing relationship for at least 10 years, and had a 3-year-old child together.

Taxi Driver

"St Mary, Jamaica - Police suspect that a 28-year-old taxi operator Richard Marsh, whose body was found hanging from a tree in his yard at Retreat Content in St Mary early yesterday morning, was responsible for the deaths of his girlfriend and her parents Tuesday night.

"According to the police, the bodies of Marsh's 25-year-old girlfriend Sherion Simpson; her mother Kathrine Laing-Matthews, 55; and her stepfather 85-year-old Roy Matthews were found with stab wounds in their Tower Isle home nearly two hours after the discovery of the taximan's body.

"Police said Simpson and her boyfriend were having problems and believed that her mother and stepfather were caught in the middle when things escalated Tuesday night.

"It is believed the murders were committed sometime between 9:00 pm and 12 midnight Tuesday. However, the bodies were not discovered until about 7:30 yesterday morning after Marsh's body was found hanging from the tree in his yard minutes after 5:00 am.

"Investigators believed that Marsh killed the three, then drove to Retreat Content - about five miles away - where he hanged himself. His body was discovered by relatives who had gone in search for him when he did not return after telling them he was going to take a bath.

"Police said following that discovery, calls made to Marsh's girlfriend's phone went unanswered. Commanding officer for St Mary, Superintendent Dudley Scott, said the police were led to the Matthews' house where Simpson had been staying for some time.

"He said the police found the bodies of all three victims inside the house with multiple knife wounds to the upper section of their bodies."

Divorce Papers Found Near Body

"HATTIESBURG, MS — Forrest County sheriff's deputies began to unravel details early Wednesday of events before and after the slaying of a Rawls Springs woman they believe was killed earlier this week by her husband.

"Sheriff Billy McGee said Rosmond Lay, 31, shot his wife, Andrea Lay, 27, once in the head and then drove some 100 miles to Greene County, Ala., where he took his own life.

"McGee said divorce papers drawn up by Andrea Lay may have prompted her husband to kill her. McGee said Rosmond Lay was served with divorce papers a day before he allegedly shot his wife.

"`This is one of those crimes that law enforcement has very little effect on as far as prevention is concerned,` McGee said. `His mother said that he had some problems with depression in the past. He was thoughtful enough that he took (their) 3-year-old child to his mother's house.`

"Attendants at an Alabama rest stop found Rosmond Lay dead after he was spotted there inside his wife's car. He had been seen at the rest stop as early as 10 a.m. Tuesday. By midnight he was reported dead, McGee said.

"`The attendant noticed last night that he was laid back in the seat with the pistol still in his hand,` McGee said. `It appeared that he committed suicide.`

"McGee said Rosmond Lay appeared to have died of a gunshot wound to the head. He said Lay did not have a criminal record.

"Investigators began an intense search for Lay after they found his wife's body in the kitchen of their home at 108 Valley Drive on Tuesday morning.

"Andrea Lay was found after co-workers at Ochsner Health System in New Orleans reported her missing to family members. Investigators believe she had been dead at least a day.

"Deputies discovered Andrea Lay partially burned - an indication Rosmond Lay attempted to cover up the slaying, they said.

"Investigators also said divorce papers were found near her body."

A Woman Scorned

"BUFORD, GA - The deaths of a man and woman found on the side of a Buford road Saturday night have been ruled a murder-suicide.

"The Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office ruled that Margie Gibbs, 67, shot and killed Jimmy Watts, 53, before turning the gun on herself.

"Gibbs was driving Watts back to the halfway house at Phillips State Prison on West Rock Quarry Road when she apparently stopped the pickup truck, pulled a revolver and shot Watts.

"Watts got out of the Toyota Tacoma after being shot once, police said.

"`He got out, she got out, they met on the passenger side,` said Cpl. David Schiralli, the police spokesman. `She shot him multiple times and then turned the gun on herself.`

"The gun was registered to Gibbs, police said.

"Watts was two days away from being paroled on a cocaine conviction for which he had served 3 1/2 years. He did his work release program with Gibbs cleaning office buildings.

"Police did not specify their relationship. Gibbs' relative said she was dating Watts. Watts' brother said they were not romantically involved.

"`It's just senseless,` Ken Watts said Wednesday. `It didn't need to happen.`

"Ken Watts said his brother met Gibbs three years ago while he was incarcerated at Walker State Prison with Gibbs' son. Gibbs started visiting Watts on weekends.

"A maid originally from Columbus, Gibbs moved to Alpharetta recently and cleaned Buckhead office buildings. She accompanied Watts to his hometown of Tiger, in Rabun County, on Saturday. They left around 5 p.m. because Watts had to be back at the Transitional Center by 7.

"Ken Watts said his brother was looking forward to coming home Monday and rebuilding his house, which burned down after he went to prison. Saturday, as they installed windows in the house, his brother confided he planned to tell Gibbs he wasn't going to live with her, Ken Watts said.

"`I'm sure she was going to be disappointed, but it's not like he had committed to her,` Ken Watts said. `He just wanted to come home and be with his family.`

"A passing motorist saw Watts and Gibbs lying near the maroon pickup around 7 p.m. Saturday, and called police. Watts was dead, but Gibbs was alive when paramedics arrived. She died of her wounds that night at Gwinnett Medical Center."

"The apparent murder-suicide took place shortly before 6 p.m. in the driveway of Fernandez' home in the 200 block of Northwest 66th Terrace, Hollywood.

"It's unclear why the two women had come to the home, but Fernandez and his wife were getting a divorce, said Storey.

"When the two women arrived at the home in a car, Fernandez confronted them. An argument erupted. Fernandez' wife then tried to flee in the car. The friend was left behind in the driveway with Fernandez.

"Fernandez then fired several shots at the car and shot the wife's friend before shooting himself.

"The wounded woman was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, where she later died.

"The couple's nine-year-old child was at home at the time of the shooting but was not harmed."
