Shooter Critical, Former Father-In-Law Dead

"FORT SMITH, AR — A man is in critical condition after killing his former father-in-law then shooting himself in the head, according to police.

"Police said the ex-wife of Micheal Ray Underwood had been living with her father after a restraining order was issued by police against Underwood on June 10th.

"Early Thursday morning, Fort Smith officers patrolling the neighborhood of 2000 South 70th Street noticed Underwood's vehicle, a 2012 silver Chevrolet truck, was parked out front. After getting no answer at the door police said they walked around the house, noticing a shattered glass door on a sunroom at the back of the house.

"Officers said they entered the home and found Underwood sitting in a chair in the living room with what looked like a gunshot wound to the head. A small .22 caliber pistol was found between his legs on the chair. Police said Underwood was unresponsive, but still alive. They later found the body of his ex-father-in-law father, Michael Shook, lying in a bed, with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

"Michael Underwood was taken to a local hospital and is in critical condition."
